This Saturday, Ballet San Antonio presents Carmen, a world premiere by Artistic Director, Willy Shives. Based on the famous opera by Georges Bizet – which was inspired by the novel by Prosper Merimee – Carmen is a tragic love story audiences won’t soon forget. When the death card reveals to Carmen, the fabled temptress of Seville, that she will die at the hands of one of her lovers, she scoffs and goes about her wiles. The main character’s attraction to an intense young soldier named Jose is short-lived when she meets a new lover, the exceptionally handsome bullfighter, Escamillo. Carmen is a sizzling tale of seduction, jealousy, betrayal and rage... all in the name of love.
Ballet San Antonio is the resident professional ballet company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in San Antonio, Texas. Founded in 1985 by Mayra Worthen and Melissa Hale Coyle under the name Texas Ballet Concerto, it began as a regional dance company. In 1991, the company took its current name, Ballet San Antonio, to reinforce its unwavering commitment to its home city.
