Next Wednesday, check out the latest exhibition at The Witte Museum, My Heart is Not Blind: On Blindness and Perception, a work by photographer and documentarian Michael Nye. My Heart is Not Blind features photographs and audio recordings of people with visual impairment that Nye interviewed over many years. Learn more about the nature of blindness and human resilience when you catch this moving display on Wednesday, March 6th.
Presented in partnership with the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the Witte Museum will explore the topic of blindness through conversations with members of the community who have firsthand experience with what it means to truly be blind. As Nye’s subjects reveal, blindness creates individual life experiences as diverse as the people themselves.
My Heart is Not Blind brings light into the dark misperceptions about blindness. Blindness does not make someone less intelligent, less capable, or less competent. Many people with visual impairments learn to adapt and frequently become more courageous and determined. Blindness and visual impairment are individual life experiences as diverse as the people themselves. There is not one common cause of visual impairment in Nye’s subjects and there is not one common story of perception, struggle or adaptation amount them.
Through Nye’s path-breaking work, visitors to the Witte Museum will see and hear his subjects’ stories firsthand and will come away knowing that there are many different ways of seeing.
Admission to My Heart is Not Blind: On Blindness and Perception is included with general admission to The Witte Museum. Adult tickets are $14, senior and military tickets are $13, and children’s tickets are $10. Children under 3 years of age may enjoy free admission.
